A Gift on Valentine's
Posted on 01 February 2017
Romance, chocolate, flowers and gifts. That's what we think of as Valentine's Day approaches, right? Well, it wasn't always like that.
Claudius, an emperor in the olden days, had banned marriage of young people based on the hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought better than married ones as they had less to lose. However, as the church thought that marriage was very sacred, St Valentine, a priest, encouraged this by marrying young couples in secret and converting them to the faith.
He was finally imprisoned and tortured for this. The story goes that the last note he wrote was to a young girl, the blind daughter of one of his judges, whom he had healed. He signed the note 'from your Valentine'.
Cards and flowers started becoming popular as gifts; then followed chocolates. Richard Cadbury 'invented' the first Valentine's Day candy box during the Victorian era, decorated with images of roses, cupids and also heart shaped boxes for the very first time.
In recent years, other more exotic gifts such as iPads and even a 'shark feeding experience' at London Aquarium were being promoted. And gifts and cards started getting weirder and funnier!
But hey! You don't need to resort to gimmicks. We, at Chic Cult, have the perfect gift for you:
