Weird and Wonderful Handbags - Part I

Posted on 26 February 2017

A handbag is a handbag. Right? Well, let’s see….

Handbags come in all shapes, sizes, materials and colours. Of course we all know that. And we expect to see a fair bit of variation, with the small matchbox size handbags that were carried on the ramp this season to the carry-everything-including-the-kitchen-sink kinda bag (must say we love those!).

But then we have designers with a quirky view of the world, with an alternative sense of humour, even. And that’s when things get weird and wonderful.

Here are some of our favorite handbags made of alternative materials. Let us know which one is your favourite!

Feeling patriotic? Bags made out of India's national symbols: Peahen feathers and a Gucci tiger skin bag (cheat alert: calf skin leather!)

Food for the brain? A broccoli bag and the undercover brain bag by Jun Takashi. Mundane fact: made of wool!

Feeling playful? Nothing like a bit of lego or some footie to get fit...

And in the spirit of recycling: a neck tie bag and a knitted plastic shopping bags it is!

And the spirit of recycling lives on, giving new meaning to the phrase, 'made to measure': a handbag made of tape measures.

And belt up for the next one....yes, they're car seat belts!

Fizzy drinks aren't always bad for you.

And answering the question: are the yellow pages still worth it? A resounding Yes! from this handbag creator.

We don't want to bust your bubble, but these bags may not last long.

And finally here is one of Chic Cult's lovely Directors, the proud possessor of a clutch made of python skin.

Know of any other odd materials used to make handbags? Let us know which of the above is your favourite....
